When you are starting out as a young kid wanting to play baseball. Your parents will probably buy you a plastic bat and a ball to start you off with. Making it your first steps in to the sport that you love.
Now those plastic bat of course do not have have the licensed or have any certification done.
After joining a real youth baseball or softball ball. You will get to use their bats. There are 2 bats that you can choose from. One is a wooden variation and you have the aluminum variation. The bats that are made of wood do not have to adhere to the new standard.
Those bats that you have to choose from are officially licensed and certified bats.
These bats have a specific weight and height requirements. Besides those previously mentioned requirements the New BBCOR .50 certification measure how the balls trampoline of the bat.
What does BBCOR stand for actually?
Well BBCOR stands for “Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution”. This was not the first standard to measure the speed of the ball when it hit the bat. The previous standard was called BESR. This standard used to measure the exit speed of the ball leaving the bat instead of measuring the Trampoline speed of the ball. By changing this standard, the pitchers are now able to hit the ball 5% faster this meaning that the ball is also leaving the bat with a 5% increase in speed.
Even though the BBCOR is the main certification standard for all games. Each and every league still has rules on there own. So make sure that you read and understand the rules that are valid the the league that you play in.
Each and every year those rules will be reevaluated and changed if necessary. These changes of the rules are then communicated to the members of the league. This does include parents of young players.
